Background:Erectile dysfunction (ED) is common in men. ED affects approximately 30% of men. About 80% of these men are at risk of developing sexual dysfunction.
Aim:To determine the risk factors for erectile dysfunction associated with sexual dysfunction in men with diabetes mellitus (DM) and hypertension (PH).
Methods:This study was conducted between January 2008 and December 2010. The data of the study were collected from medical records in China. The data of the study were used as a background to evaluate the association of diabetes mellitus with ED in men. Data of ED were evaluated using multiple linear regression analyses.
Results:Data of all men with diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and DM and/or PH were collected for a total of 3,105 men. Of these, 603 men (10.8%) were diagnosed with diabetes mellitus, 469 (12.2%) with hypertension, and 2,029 (11.6%) with DM. The overall risk of ED was significantly increased with diabetes mellitus (1.78 times) and hypertension (2.14 times) than with hypertension alone (1.48 times). The odds ratio of ED associated with the risk of hypertension was 3.13 times for diabetes and hypertension (2.04 times) for diabetes alone. There was no significant difference between ED among the groups. A significant increase in the risk of ED was observed among men with diabetes (3.09 times), with hypertension (1.82 times) and with hypertension alone (1.53 times). However, there were no significant differences among the groups with diabetes (1.78 times) or hypertension alone (2.14 times). The risk of ED was increased among men with diabetes (1.78 times) compared with the risk among men with hypertension alone (1.48 times). The risk of ED was increased among men with DM (1.53 times), with PH (2.14 times) and with PH alone (2.04 times).
Conclusion:A significant increase in the risk of ED was observed among men with diabetes and hypertension.
Note:The risk of ED is increased in men with diabetes mellitus, PH, and DM and/or PH, but not in men with hypertension alone.

1.Nitrates (e.g., nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate): Cialis and nitrates both lower blood pressure. Taking them together can cause a significant and potentially life-threatening drop in blood pressure (hypotension), leading to dizziness, fainting, or even heart attack or stroke. It is contraindicated to use Cialis with nitrates or recreational "poppers" (amyl nitrites).
2.Alpha-blockers (e.g., prazosin, terazosin, tamsulosin): Both Cialis and alpha-blockers relax blood vessels, which can lead to excessive blood pressure reduction when used together. This may result in dizziness, fainting, or orthostatic hypotension (a sudden drop in blood pressure when standing). If needed, your doctor may adjust the dosage or recommend spacing the medications.
3.Other antihypertensive drugs (e.g., atenolol, propranolol, enalapril, lisinopril): Cialis can enhance the blood-pressure-lowering effects of these medications. While this interaction is usually less severe than with nitrates or alpha-blockers, it can still cause dizziness or fainting in sensitive individuals. Close monitoring of blood pressure is recommended.
